I was fortunate enough to end my misery with alcohol at the age of 27 on July 21st, 1996. And when I say misery, that’s truly what my life was. Miserable. A repeat of the same drunken night over and over and over again.

Out of the gate, my first drinking experience at 15 should have been a warning sign that my response and behaviors with alcohol in my system were not normal. Nothing scared me enough to think about stopping, not rape in a blackout, not driving in blackouts, not ending up in the hospital with a head injury and multiple stitches. Nothing.

I did not know I was an alcoholic. That all changed in 1994 when a total stranger was put into my life. I literally picked up someone on the side of the road whose car had broken down on an exit ramp in Stamford, CT and needed help. That simple act changed the course of my life. He told me he was an alcoholic and had stopped drinking.

It took two more years of misery before I reached out and said, “I need help”. That was on July 21, 1996. Since that day, my life has become a joy and a blessing and a gift to live. I look forward to every day, to see the sunshine, to hear the leaves crunch under my feet, to work at a job I love, to be a wife and a mom, to exercise, to ride my mountain bike. TO LIVE!!! For the last 24+ years, I have not only existed, but I have enjoyed and celebrated and laughed and LIVED. I had no idea a life without alcohol in it could be so fulfilling. I am grateful I had the opportunity to try it and stick with it!
